What is Cyberknife VSI and How Can it Help Treat Breast Cancer?
The Cyberknife VSI is a robotic radiosurgery system that can deliver extremely precise doses of radiation to breast tumors, while sparing healthy surrounding tissue. Typically, women with early stage, localized breast cancer are treated with a lumpectomy or masectomy, followed by radiation to ensure any remaining microscopic cancer cells are treated. Cyberknife offers the most sophisticated non-invasive radiation treatment available, as other radiosurgery systems cannot treat tumors with the same level of accuracy and are more invasive. Cyberknife can be used in conjunction with surgery and chemotherapy, and offers many benefits beyond traditional radiation therapy. The advantage that Colorado Cyberknife offers patients is that we are one of a few facilities in the world to offer the latest non-invasive radiation treatment, with the next-generation Cyberknife VSI unit, which brings revolutionary benefits. We also boast the region’s leading radiosurgery doctors.
Benefits of Cyberknife VSI Treatment for Breast Cancer
Painless & Non-InvasiveCyberknife’s treatment is an out-patient procedure, completed in as little as five treatments. No anesthesia is required and the treatment process is painless and comfortable. In contrast, breast brachytherapy involves the surgical placement of a catheter into the breast tissue. |
|
Targets the Tumor, Not Healthy TissueWhat differentiates Cyberknife from traditional radiation therapy and other radiosurgery systems, is its ability to target the tumor, with sub-millimeter accuracy, while sparing healthy tissues and structures. |
|
Little to No Recovery Time or Side EffectsCyberknife’s precision results in minimal to no side effects or recovery time. Some patients may experience mild fatigue or nausea following treatment. In contrast, potential complications from breast brachytherapy are infection, hematoma or abscess. While Cyberknife can automatically correct for tumor movement due to patient breathing, studies demonstrate that other radiosurgery systems have resulted in a higher risk of overdosing the skin and nearby critical structures, in order to compensate for such movement.. . |
