What is Cyberknife VSI and How Can it Treat Trigeminal Neuralgia?
Cyberknife’s robotic radiosurgery system is the latest non-invasive radiation alternative to surgery for the treatment of cancerous and benign brain tumors, as well as functional disorders of the brain such as Trigeminal Neuralgia. Cyberknife treatment delivers radiation with extreme precision, while protecting healthy tissues and structures. Cyberknife offers the most sophisticated non-invasive radiation treatment available, as other radiosurgery systems cannot treat tumors/conditions in the brain with the same level of accuracy, and are more invasive. Cyberknife offers Trigeminal Neuralgia patients the opportunity to avoid the high risk of complications resulting from brain surgery, or can be used as an ideal non-invasive radiation approach following surgery/other treatments that are no longer effective in controlling the pain. The advantage that Colorado Cyberknife offers patients is that we are one of a few facilities in the world to offer the latest non-invasive radiation treatment, with the next-generation Cyberknife VSI unit, which has revolutionary benefits. We also boast the region’s leading radiosurgery doctors.
What Are the Treatment Options for Trigeminal Neuralgia?
Medications
There are a number of treatment options available to Trigeminal Neuralgia patients. Often the first treatments prescribed are anticonvulsant and/or pain medications. While for some individuals, these medications may help minimize the pain, others are drug resistant, or the medications eventually become ineffective. Due to the side effects of these medications, long-term use is often difficult for many patients.
Surgery
There are several surgical options available that involve either relieving the pressure on the nerve or selectively damaging it to disrupt the pain signals. While some of these procedures have had high success rates, the potential for complications are considered too severe by some, particularly when there is a possibility of a recurrence. In contrast to surgery, Cyberknife is completely non-invasive, and therefore should be considered as a first treatment option for patients with Trigeminal Neuralgia.
Cyberknife Treatment Success Study
Stanford researchers examined pain relief outcomes after radiosurgery for Trigeminal Neuralgia patients, using the CyberKnife System with treatment protocols that have evolved over several years. This “optimal” treatment approach resulted in pain relief judged as excellent or good by 96% of patients, with relatively low side effects.(Adler et al. 2009 ).

Benefits of Cyberknife VSI Treatment for Trigeminal Neuralgia
.
Painless & Non-Invasivenot require the use of an invasive head-frame. Therefore, no anesthesia is required, and the procedure is done on an outpatient basis. This means that a patient can easily have repeat treatments, in cases of recurrence. |

Targets the Nerve, Spares Healthy Tissue3-dimensional image that locates the Trigeminal Nerve. Cyberknife’s computer program evaluates the shape, size, and location of the nerve, as well as the tissues and structures that will need to be protected. Cyberknife treats Trigeminal Neuralgia by destroying the pain fibers in the nerve. Long-term treatment success for pain relief has been achieved with Cyberknife, and in case of a recurrence, treatments are easily repeated without any side effects or complications. |

.
Little to No Recovery Time or Side EffectsTraditional surgery options can involve complications, such as facial numbness, hearing loss, vertigo, sensory numbness, and more rarely stroke, bruising/swelling of his brain, hydrocephalus, facial paralysis, and paralysis of the muscles that control movement of the eyes. Because Cyberknife’s treatment is precise and non-invasive, the complications and side effects associated with traditional surgery can be avoided or minimized. Patients can leave the hospital right after treatment with minimal to no recovery time or complications. |
