Why Cyberknife

The CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery system is a non-invasive alternative to surgery that is FDA approved for the treatment of both cancerous and non-cancerous tumors anywhere in the body, including the prostate, lung, brain, spine, liver, pancreas and kidney. Our team includes leaders in radiosurgery and CyberKnife expertise, and we have the latest capabilities, including the world’s first next-generation CyberKnife unit.

What is Radiosurgery?

The term “radiosurgery” means radiation surgery, but it is not actually surgery. Rather, it utilizes extremely precise beams of radiation that destroy tumor cells. For decades, traditional radiation therapy (radiotherapy) has been used to shrink tumors either before or after surgery, in combination with chemotherapy, or as a stand-alone treatment for certain cancers. Radiosurgery was introduced in 1967, and this more powerful and precise radiation treatment has been used successfully ever since. While radiosurgery has been a proven effective treatment for the past four decades, technological limitations have restricted its use to the treatment of tumors in the head.

What is the CyberKnife System?

The revolution of CyberKnife® is that now our physicians can treat tumors virtually anywhere in the body. This includes tumors once considered untreatable or inoperable, and even patients who’ve been told they are ineligible for treatment at all.

CyberKnife is the first radiosurgery system with the ability to track a tumor’s true position in the body throughout treatment, providing the sub-millimeter accuracy that is needed to avoid irradiating normal tissues and critical structures. CyberKnife can even maintain its accuracy during treatment of tumors that move with respiration, such as lung and spine tumors, which are normally challenging to treat with traditional radiotherapy options.

In the field of radiation oncology, the CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System is universally recognized as the premier radiosurgery system. Cyberknife has been validated and proven in numerous peer-reviewed publications for its precise and effective treatment of tumors.

Why should I consider CyberKnife?

CyberKnife’s precision makes it possible for our physicians to treat patients who have inoperable tumors, are not candidates for surgery, or are ineligible for conventional radiotherapy – all with excellent results.

CyberKnife may even be preferred for some patients that are treatable with other methods. This is because CyberKnife can often achieve equal or better results… without chemotherapy, invasive surgery and complications, anesthesia, recovery time, pain or a hospital stay. Most patients just get up and go back to their regular activities.

Why Colorado Cyberknife?

Colorado Cyberknife is one of a few facilities in the world to offer the latest non-invasive radiation treatment, with the next-generation Cyberknife VSI unit, which brings revolutionary advantages to our patients. We also boast the region’s leading radiosurgery doctors. The CyberKnife VSI System may be used for procedures ranging from world-class Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) to Robotic Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT). The VSI system allows our center to broaden the range of non-invasive treatment options we offer, which allows our patients to have minimal to no side effects or recovery time compared to patients who may receive treatment with other radiotherapy or radiosurgery options.

Treatment with Cyberknife VSI (SBRT or SRS treatment) is typically performed in as little as one to five sessions, compared to 30-40 sessions with other radiotherapy options. Cyberknife’s IMRT treatment typically involves more treatment sessions, however, still significantly fewer sessions compared to other radiotherapy options and radiosurgery machines. Another advantage our facility offers is to allow easy treatment for patients who have mobility issues, such as patients in wheel chairs or who weigh up to 500 lbs, through our proprietary RoboCouch – which allows patients to easily get into the treatment position and no additional adjustments are needed throughout treatment. Our doctors are renowned radiosurgeons in their field and our mission is to provide the highest standard of care to our patients.
